Canon Point: End of volume 5
Background: Ren on the RWBY wiki
Personality:
One of the best words to describe Lie Ren is Zen. He is very quiet throughout the series, much happier to observe his surrounding and the people around him than to engage, though he is always paying attention. When we first meet Ren, he is quietly getting ready for his first real day of training at Beacon, and his best friend Nora is babbling away, like always, as he goes through his morning routine. It’s not until she says something ridiculous about sloth noises that he finally breaks his silence, humoring her and showing some of the infinite amount of patience he has for his loud, bubbly, best friend.
It’s his calm nature that gives him that patience, and it’s his calm nature that gets him through a fight with a King Taijitu in the forest that first day. When faced with the giant snake Grimm he doesn’t panic, but quickly assesses the situation and throws himself into battle. He keeps his head about him even when being almost overpowered and that’s how he comes out victorious. Ren is very much in control of himself and his emotions. He can often be seen meditating, even while others are talking around him. His responses and reactions are very deliberate and calculated, and he reacts with logic rather than emotions (save for one instance, which we will get to).
He’s very studious, and serious about school and training. He agrees wholeheartedly with Neptune when the other states he thought libraries were for studying, and Nora refers to him as the perfect student. Being studious doesn’t mean that he doesn’t know how to stop and have fun, however, especially with his friends. For example, at the dance he joins team JNPR for a choreographed dance (that if RWBY Chibi can be believed he choreographed) in front of the whole school, including visiting students.
He’s protective of and cares about his friends, even sitting in a towel awkwardly on his bed with Jaune talks about girl troubles without complaint. He mothers them, cooking for them all on multiple occasions, even trying to get Pyrrha to drink his algae smoothie before her round in the Vytal Tournament. When Ruby is threatened during Team RNJR’s trip to Mistral, he doesn’t hesitate to step in front of her with Nora to protect her, and fights at her side rather than let her be taken, even if it means possibly getting injured or killed.
We don’t really get to know Ren well until post-volume three, when he joins Team RNJR on their way to Mistral. He joins up with Ruby, Jaune and Nora after Pyrrha’s death without hesitation in order to head for Haven Academy to find her killer, as well as to find out what’s going on following the Battle of Beacon and how to stop it. Pyrrha would have done the same for any of her friends, and he is ready to help in any way possible. We can see his insightfulness when it comes to his friends when Jaune hesitates to put on his new armor, saying he guesses they all have to change. It’s when Ruby, overcome with laughter at Jaune’s hoodie, and Jaune’s defense of it that Ren speaks up, telling him they don’t have to change that much, trying to put his friend at ease with letting some things go and moving forward.
The closer the team gets to Mistral, the quieter and more uneasy Ren gets- a harsher side comes out when they reach the village of Shion only to find it completely destroyed. You start to see some anger leak through, anger that wasn’t apparent before this point. Instead of staying to bury the dead Huntsman, he suggests shortly that they need to keep moving forward because it’s not safe there. Again, his anger can be seen slipping out when they reach the crossroads while trying to find Qrow some help. Ren wants to go up the mountain because it’s faster, while Ruby and Jaune want to cut through the village because Qrow won’t make it up the mountain path. Instead of explaining that that village holds terrible memories and that a dangerous Grimm could be in the area, he gets angry, insisting that it’s too far and they can’t go that way- almost going so far as to yell. Nora comes up with a compromise and they split up.
His protectiveness and love for his friends sends both he and Nora back down the mountain when they realize the Nuckelavee is headed for Qrow, Jaune and Ruby. His fear of the Grimm that killed his parents and entire village is no match for the need to keep his friends safe. It’s also seen when he doesn’t hesitate to activate his semblance to hide Jaune and Qrow from the Nuckelavee when it's heading right for them, before telling them to run. It’s seen in every battle, when Ren moves to protect Nora or Jaune or any of his friends, as well as when he protects Jaune and Weiss during the fight at Haven as Jaune heals her.
During the battle with the Nuckelavee, Ren acts rashly, attacking with fury and years of pent up anger- so much so that Jaune has to tell him to stop messing around. It’s the first time we see him act with emotions rather than logic, and it’s to his detriment. At one point, his aura is almost completely depleted and he’s hiding with Nora under one of the houses. He almost immediately moves to head back to the fight, angry and ready to recklessly get himself killed when Nora slaps sense back into him (literally), telling him she won’t let him go out there and get killed because he’s angry. They need to be smart and logical to take it down. Hearing her and seeing the fear on her face at the thought of losing him gets through to him, and he finally calms down, getting himself back under control.
They are able to defeat the Nuckelavee working as a team, and Ren is the one to strike the final blows, for his mother, his father and for himself. It’s with the slaying of the beast that changed his life that he lets go of something he had been carrying around for years. It’s like his walls have come down and he can truly be himself, even going as far as holding Nora’s hand on the airship and letting her cuddle up to his side. Once they reach Mistral, he’s seen to be smiling more, and to be enjoying his friends’ company. He teases Ruby while they are cooking and is even shown laughing with them all around the dinner table.
Ren says it best after the team is reunited with Yang and Weiss: growing up is changing, and though they have come a long way, they still have more growing to do.This sums him up well- he carried around his parents’ death for so long, letting it weigh heavy on himself, letting it affect how he moved through the world. Now that he’s let it go, he’s still the calm deliberate person he’s always been, but he’s lighter, more hopeful- something they are all going to need in the near future.
Abilities:
- Combat: Ren is a skilled fighter, like all huntsmen from his world. He can move and react with impressive speed and has impressive strength. He is proficient in martial arts, and also with weapons. His main weapons are a pair of dagger guns called Stormflower. He uses them both for ranged and melee fighting- even going so far as throwing them like a boomerang.
- Aura: In the world of RWBY Aura is the manifestation of a person's soul. Aura is an energy source for Huntsmen. It can be used as defense, creating a shield, keeping one from being injured during battle. It can be used as offense sending waves of energy towards an enemy. It also can heal small injuries like cuts and bruises. It takes a lot of focus and energy to unlock and use one's aura but with practice it becomes second nature. In battle aura can deplete, a depleted aura can leave the person open to harm. Ren like all huntsmen has proficient use of his aura, going as far as using it as a shield and also offensively as a blast of power.
- Semblance: Semblance is the manifestation of specific powers unique to each person- like their super hero power. It is fueled by their aura and its thought to reflect their personality in some way. Ren’s semblance is the ability to mask negative emotions, which makes him able to avoid detection by Grimm. It also helps to calm down when faced with fear. He’s able to channel this power to other people as he did the night he unlocked it, giving it to Nora and helping them both avoid detection by a nevermore. He can also channel the semblance through the ground to other people at a distance.
Alignment: Sosyne: Ren is normally the definition of calm, he stays calm during battles and keeps a level head. His semblance even masks negative emotions which helps to calm the person he is using it on down. On the opposite if pushed hard enough he can succumb to anger…it just takes a lot- like facing down the grim that killed his parents.
